Link Building - A Grey Art

It never ceases to amaze me the ways people find to build the backlink profiles for the sites they manage.

As a true geek, I love to check out my company's competitors in the natural search rankings and take a look at where they're getting their links from.  Most recently I've found the majority are sponsoring blogs in one shape or form, however, today I came across a new approach (to me anyway).  It looks like one of our competitors has 'encouraged' another domain, that has no obvious relationship to them, to 301 redirect URLs from said domain's site to the site of our competitor. Genius or Black Hat?

Google Nuggets

Is it just me, or are the folks at Google slowly beginning to share the odd golden nugget here and there?
Following on from Google's formal admission last year about meta keywords not being considered any longer (something SEO geeks suspected for a long time), their Google Report Card, released at the beginning of March, admits that the meta description is also off the table.

Another recent revelation was from Google's Matt Cutts confirming that 301 redirects can leak link juice.

Suddenly I have a lot more work to do!

p.s. Yes, I have bloggers' guilt for not posting since October - apologies to my legion of 2 fans!
